TRAUTENFELS CASTLE IN THE ENN VALLEY

Just about a ten-minute drive from the IMLAUER Hotel Schloss Pichlarn stands the impressive Trautenfels Castle, perched on a small hill at the foot of the Grimmings. A visit to the castle is the perfect way to complement your stay with us—whether as a cultural highlight, to see the special exhibitions that change annually, or simply to enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the Enns Valley.

The castle is also easily accessible by bike: Depending on your pace, the ride between the two castles takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

The castle is accessible to guests with limited mobility.

A historical jewel

Trautenfels Castle took on its current appearance in the 17th century. However, earlier castle structures date back to the 13th century. After its renovation in 1664 by Count Siegmund Friedrich von Trauttmansdorff, the Baroque castle was given its current name.

The ornate frescoes by the Italian painter Carpoforo Tencalla and the intricately detailed stucco work by Alessandro Sereni remain particularly impressive to this day. Since its careful comprehensive renovation in the 1990s, Trautenfels Castle has skillfully combined historic architecture with modern exhibition elements.

Be sure to climb the 142 steps up to the observation tower’s platform: Once you reach the top, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the middle Enns Valley and the surrounding mountains.

Nature in Context

Today, the castle houses the Regional Museum of the Universalmuseum Joanneum. In a total of 13 uniquely designed rooms, visitors can explore the cultural and natural history of the Styrian Enns Valley and the Ausseerland region—from traditional customs and alpine farming to geology, hunting, and folk art.

A special highlight this year is the special exhibition “Flowers Up Close – Myths, Symbols, Fragrance, and Love,” which runs through October 31, 2026.

The exhibition explores the cultural, scientific, and artistic significance of flowers. Scent stations, interactive installations, and extraordinary exhibits invite visitors to experience the world of flowers with all their senses. Topics covered include symbolism, customs, love, transience, and social developments.

Interesting Facts About Trautenfels Castle

Right behind Trautenfels Castle lie the idyllic Trautenfels Fish Ponds. In these clear waters, char and trout, among other species, are raised with great care using natural methods.

Visitors who come to see us in late May or early June may, with a little luck, have the opportunity to witness a very special natural spectacle: At this time of year, the beautiful Siberian irisesbloom in front of Trautenfels Castle. These protected, wildflowers transform the meadow into an impressive sea of blossoms for about two weeks.

Since the Iris Meadow is also a valuable habitat and breeding ground for numerous wild animals, we ask that you refrain from walking on the meadow and picking the flowers so that this unique natural experience can be preserved.
